Vegan Kalamazoo provides a supportive social and learning environment for those within the greater Kalamazoo area who are following, or interested in learning more about, veganism and/or plant-based diets. We seek to promote veganism by offering inclusive events and becoming a recognizable presence in the community.
Hello! We’re your friends and neighbors in Kalamazoo, Portage, Oshtemo, and surrounding communities. We love craft beer, the Broncos and Hornets, the Symphony, classic cars, South Haven beaches, and all the other great things about living in southwest Michigan. And we also love being vegan—which means we don’t eat foods or use other products derived from animals. We love it because it’s:
- Compassionate. If we can be healthy and happy without animals suffering and dying, that’s great!
- Eco-friendly. Animal agriculture devastates the environment. Locally, communities endure contaminated water and air. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) concluded that worldwide livestock farming generates 18% of the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions — nearly 50% more than all forms of transportation.
- Healthy. Numerous studies show that vegans tend to live longer and healthier lives than meat-eaters. Nutritionfacts.org is a good source for detailed, scientifically-backed information.
In ordinary times we hold several live events per month – potlucks, coffee hours, discussion groups, etc. We stopped those during COVID, but have started to slowly introduce more events.
